Stoke City 3-1 Stevenage highlights and reactionStevenage’s FA Cup run came to an end as they were defeated 3-1 by Stoke City in an entertaining tie. The in-form League Two side, buoyed on by 3, 291 travelling supporters, were eyeing passage to the fifth round of the competition for the first time since 2012. However, their return to the Midlands – where they came from behind to upset Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in the previous round – was an unhappy one.
It's something we want to try to remedy and get lads back because it gives us the best chance of winning when everyone is fit and available. KEY EVENTAlex Neil press conferenceNeil: I think there are two disappointing things from our perspective, which were the manner we conceded the goal - a punt from the goalkeeper, we don't win the first header, they anticipate it falling behind better than us and the ball ends up in the back of the net when we really could have probably taken a touch four yards off the line. It takes me back to Reading and the goal we conceded down there. There was that and Connor Taylor's injury, which was a big disappointment. He's got such a bright future and I'm trying to get him involved in some of the games so he can stake his claim and give him an opportunity and he breaks down.
It gives them something to look forward to. There's nothing better than a big team coming here and our lads leaving everything on the pitch and dying for the shirt and giving everything they've got. That's what fans want to see. It's what they would deem themselves to do if they were on the pitch for their club. We need to get to that point when that's how they feel about what they see from us on the park. Peter SmithBack to back home wins for the first time this season lays a important marker? Neil: I just think we've spoken a lot about getting a connection with the fans, which is vitally important for any successful team. If your fans believe in you and back you, it really is like an extra man on the pitch.
We know we've still got a lot of work to do and we're doing our best to get there as quickly as we can. Peter SmithSo partnerships are key then as he develops in the team, linking up with Tymon or Thompson and balancing opposites? Neil: It's combinations. It's something I've spoken about since I've come here, the dynamics of the squad.
The best players don't make the best teams, the best teams are players complementing each other so their strengths balance off and they do specific roles in the team. That's something I want to focus on as we recruit for the squad. Peter SmithCelina gives you the chance to change your system, although he's not a touchline hugging winger... Neil:... he can be.
When he's fit and we've got the likes of him and Lewis (Baker) in that central area I think they're as good as anyone in the league in terms of patrolling that central space, making sure they land on second balls and he's such a powerhouse and covers a lot of ground. He gives great protection to the back line as well when he plays in and he's capable of a moment like today when he produces a wonderful effort for the goal. The frustrating thing from my perspective - and I know some of them have had long-term injuries - but in terms of having Souttar available, Laurent available, Dujon available, Powell available, Gayle available... I don't think there's been a game this season why I've had everyone fit to choose from.
Peter SmithA busy couple of days ahead before deadline? Neil: Potentially. It's hard to say really because what happens is that there are players we would put inquiries in about early in the window and at that stage they are not going to be let out or potentially leave their club but with movement those players might become available late in the window. There are a few things going on in the background. I don't know if they're going to land or not but I can assure everyone that we're active and trying to make sure that by the end of window we're as strong as we can possibly be. Peter SmithDoes a cup run feed in to that? Neil: Yes of course.
Peter SmithYou said Celina would give Stoke something different and that was obvious within the first couple of minutes? Neil: I think his first pass he splits the line for Jacob to get in behind. He splits the defence three or four times with his passing and trying to look for that first pass. He's very different in terms of what we've got with his profile. He wants to play in between the lines, play on the half-turn, try to play the most damaging pass. Sometimes it doesn't come off and might look a little bit sloppy.
