With the Rabbitohs hanging onto the match at 22-12 on the back of a 94 per cent completion rate, Cook put the game beyond doubt midway through the second half when he broke free to run 30 metres and score. “He understands the principles, that what I like about the way he gets out, ” Blues assistant coach Danny Buderus said in Fox League commentary. “He understands when to run... He always runs to the right (correct) side. ” Cook couldn’t have chosen a better moment than on Friday night at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Further tries to Damien Cook and Greg Inglis confirmed what was already obvious to the crowd, as the ever desperate Knights pushed passes, coughed up ball and gave up penalties, with Reynolds adding two penalty goals. Ponga kept trying until the end, at one stage taking the goalkicking duties off the shattered Sio and putting on a late try with some beautiful foot work and a deft short ball to Lachlan Fitzgibbon. But by that time the game was gone; stolen from them by a brain snap in a game that was, more than most, defined by a single moment. THE REPORTDamien Cook’s NSW State of Origin chances have received another boost, as he helped South Sydney to a comfortable 36-18 defeat of Newcastle.

And it was the 20-year-old fullback who looked set to draw his side level when a beautiful right to left cut-out ball found an unmarked Sio who cruised over the line before angling in towards the posts to dive over. That’s when fate intervened. To the credit of Rabbitohs back-rower Angus Crichton, a play that all coaches love paid off with the Roosters-bound star diving at Sio at the last second, causing the winger to drop the ball. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7. 55pm AEST. The Rabbits get a chance to make their spot in the 8 a little safer tonight. However in Newcastle, with Origin players missing, this game becomes a bit more of a lottery. Ladder positions, to an extent, go out the window when picking the winner. Newcastle returned to the winner’s circle last weekend with a 38-12 win over a disappointing Titans outfit and have been showing signs of improvement in recent weeks.

With the amount of absentees for Souths, this match does become a 50/50 proposition. However, if the packs do cancel themselves out, the Rabbitohs should have more points in them. They will win in a close one. Ken Sio bombed try cruels Knights as Rabbitohs seize momentum for big winNEWCASTLE winger Ken Sio will never forget this night after an astounding bombed try stole the momentum from his side in a thumping 36-18 loss to the Rabbitohs that could have been very different. After copping two tries in the first five minutes of the game, the Knights rallied behind young prodigy Kalyn Ponga and veteran winger Shaun Kenny-Dowall to emerge from the sheds at half-time down 16-12 but brimming with confidence. MATCH CENTRE: Knights v BulldogsIf not for the wayward boot of goalkicker Sio, the Knights could even have been leading when he turned the course of the match cruelly against his side. Having wrestled the momentum late in the first half, the Knights started the second full of purpose, with Ponga causing a back-pedalling Souths defence all kinds of problems.

Adam Reynolds knocked over the sideline conversion like it was nothing. Newcastle’s balloon burst. Rather than receiving a kick-off with the scores level or a two-point lead, it was them kicking to the visitors with a 10-point deficit and momentum cruelly snatched away. “Well it’s just dragged all the momentum away from them — Newcastle ended that first half the way Souths started. Ken Sio gets across the line and then we see things change, ” Fox League commentator Greg Alexander said during the call. The Rabbitohs seized the change in fortunes and from that point on a big win looked inevitable.

This gave Cody Walker more time on the ball to create and Mitchell was a key focus in attack. Again, Alex Johnston was scoring tries for fun. Souths have been hit hard by injury and Origin unavailability. Campbell Graham is out with a facial fracture and his place is taken by Taane Milne. Hame Sele is out with a hamstring issue, replaced by Thomas Burgess in the starting side. Davvy Moale joins the bench.

Souths are, however, another level up. Newcastle’s wingers had a field day against the Titans, with Edrick Lee scoring a club-record 5 tries and Dominic Young scoring a hattrick. It’s doubtful as to whether the Rabbitohs’ defence will leak that much on the edges. The Knights have 2 big ins with Jayden Brailey named on the bench and Bradman Best coming in for Dane Gagai. Tex Hoy wears the fullback jersey with Kalyn Ponga also away on Origin duty. It’s difficult to tell just how much impact Latrell Mitchell had last weekend, but the Rabbitohs were very impressive in their 30-12 defeat of the Eels. Importantly, the Rabbitohs pack dominated the middle, with the Eels struggling to march down the field.
